Shanghai launched "Write It Right" activity to rectify English signs in public places
On the occasion of 200-day countdown to the 2010 Shanghai Expo, International Channel Shanghai (ISC) of Shanghai Media Group (SMG) launched a "Write It Right" activity.
The activity aims to develop a centralized rectification to English signs in public places to enhance the level of Shanghai Foreign Service and welcome Shanghai World Expo with a better city “soft environment”.
ISC is the only foreign-language channel of Shanghai, which has been reporting Expo-related activities through “ICS News” and “Expo Connection”.
The activity has won the support of urban management, social mobilization and window services headquarters, as well as support from Shanghai Language Committee, and Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision.
College student volunteers will check all the English signs in the downtown according to the “Translation norms of public places”, which are jointly issued by Shanghai Language Committee and Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision.
The right translation form will be uploaded to the database of Shanghai Language Committee after having been reviewed and confirmed by the language experts. After that, relevant functional departments and relevant districts will give relevant disputing party recommendation of the rectification.
