Shanghai World Expo visitors top 44 million

Some 430,300 people entered the Shanghai Expo site by 7pm yesterday, bringing the total number of World Expo visitors to 44.12 million so far. 

Among yesterday's visitors, 119,000 came in tour groups and 59,000 were local residents using complimentary tickets offered by the Shanghai government. A total of 73,067 tickets were sold at the gates, 27,570 of them for evening visit. 

As of 6pm, 82,000 visitors had passed through Houtan entrance, compared with 66,000 at Shangnan Road entrance, 69,000 at Changqing Road entrance and 57,000 at Gaoke Road entrance. 

As many as 69 shows were performed at Expo venues from morning to 5pm yesterday, attracting 37,900 spectators. 

Some 5,872 volunteers worked on the site and five Expo clinics treated 448 visitors yesterday by 4pm. 

The Expo Organizer expects some 120,000 group visitors today and advises local residents with free tickets for August and students on vacation to see the Expo as early as possible to avoid overcrowding.
