Two Expo pavilions crowned with architecture awards
The Spain Expo Pavilion and UK Expo Pavilion have won two of the 12 Royal Institute of British Architects International Awards for this year. The design team for the Spain Expo Pavilion is the studio of Enric Miralles-Benedetta Tagliabue and Heatherwick Studio designed the UK Expo Pavilion. The prestigious prizes reward the excellent work done by RIBA members around the world.
The Spain Expo Pavilion is designed to be a hand-weaved wicker basket structure supported by a steel framework inside. "The Basket," as some have dubbed the pavilion, is "dressed" in more than 8,000 wicker panels in brown, beige, and black.
The 6,000-square-meter UK Expo Pavilion is composed of a soft cube-like structure known as the "Seed Cathedral" and the area around it is designed like wrapping paper, making it seem as if the wrappers have fallen open to reveal a sparkling jewel of life.
During the daytime, each of the pavilion’s 7.5-meter-long rods act like fiber optic filaments, drawing on daylight to illuminate the interior. At night, light sources embedded in each rod allow the whole structure to glow.
